May was a really good month when it came to reading. I got through nice mix of novels including some historical fiction, contemporary fiction, and romance. Below are the book covers/titles, along with some general impressions and reflection points. These books gave plenty of food for thought, so by no means are the lists exhaustive. Just a little detail to provide insight and perhaps pique your interests.

Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi
POWERFUL and brilliant story starting on the coast of Ghana and spreading across the world. In 8 generations of one family, we see the legacy of slavery and its lasting impact.
-The widespread effects of slavery. How everyone and everything was implicated and/or impacted by the system.
-How experiences with race vary across time and place.
-The role of religion in the spread and justification of slavery and colonialism.

Black Girls Must Die ExhaustED by Jayne Allen
GREAT read, particularly for those of us in the adulting phase of life…constantly making decisions and navigating work, family, friends, and everything in between.
-All the different instances of stress we may internalize and embody.
-Family planning, women’s reproductive rights and women’s healthcare.
-What really matters in life?

Before I Let Go by Kennedy Ryan
A black romance novel and the first of its series. You will appreciate the realness of the book—it’s set in the real world, with real people, and real challenges.
-Different ways to process grief.
-The value of therapy.

This Could Be Us By Kennedy Ryan
“The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off.” Prepare to be emotionally invested in this book and the second of the series.
-The importance of community and a solid support network.
-Autism and many different ways its presented.
-Parenting children with unique personalities and needs.

Flipping Boxcars By Cedric the Entertainer
An entertaining and suspenseful novel. (NOT Cedric’s autobiography).
If you’ve read any of these novels, or added them to you TBR (To Be Read) list, I’d love to hear it! Comment and share your thoughts below.
